Geeks for Social Change is a small volunteer collective in Manchester building technology for communities, not for profit. We run PlaceCal, a community events calendar, publish a blog about community technology, and help organisations get a grip on their tech. You can read about what we believe if you want the deeper why.

If you'd like to get involved, there are two accounts to set up. This takes about ten minutes and you only do it once.

1. Make a GitHub account

GitHub is where our work lives: tasks, code, and documents. You don't need to be technical to use it, most of what we do there is writing and ticking boxes.

  1. Go to github.com/signup and create a free account
  2. Pick any username you like (you can use a nickname)
  3. Tell us your username so we can add you to the geeksforsocialchange organisation

2. Join the Discord

Discord is where we chat. The social stuff, the quick questions, the community.

  1. Join at discord.gfsc.studio
  2. Say hello in the welcome channel, someone will wave back

3. That's it

Once you're in, your GitHub login also gets you into our team wiki, and the Start Here page there walks you through your first weeks. There's no homework and no rush: your first few weeks are for finding your feet and working out what you'd enjoy doing.

While you're deciding, the Volunteer information and Volunteer Agreement pages on this site say what volunteering here looks like and what you can expect from us.
