Social Media: Process

This sounds like a lot because I've been as exhaustive as possible so we have a clear guide how to do it, but now I'm in the rhythm it takes about 20 mins tops end to end. Good luck!

You will need...

  • Access to GFSC Bitwarden for social media passwords
  • Affinity Studio
  • Access to the GFSC Community folder on Google Drive
  • The Basic Sans font. Install Adobe Creative Cloud and this is free.
  • Admin access to GFSC org on LinkedIn (not crucial)

Final prep and sending

  1. Write a good excerpt! This is the bigger grey text at the top. This is really important as it goes everywhere and should describe what you get from reading the piece.
  2. Put the excerpt somewhere you can access it on your phone such as message to yourself on the Signal desktop app so you can paste it elsewhere, but any syncd notes app works great
  3. Final sweep the article for style and punctuation a. Fix the left and right quotes from "" to “” (on a mac this is option [and shift option [) b. Switch hyphens (-) to em dashes (–, option - on a mac) c. Make sure titles are in a logical order (h2 -> h3, don't skip a level) d. If it's a longer article, add the subscribe box at a midway point using the / menu with a CTA linked to the article e. Make sure there is a featured image f. Make sure all images have alt text g. NB: if the article isn't saving it seems to be a bug when the alt text is too long. Shorten it and it should work.
  4. Big breath!
  5. Press publish then select "publish and email", "all subscribers", "now" (nb: we are deprecating the every post list in the new year, so this might change its name soon!)

Post

We post to six places: Bsky, Mastodon, Instagram, Tiktok, LinkedIn, and the GFSC Discord announcements channel. We are hoping to automate some of these later.

Bsky, Mastodon, LinkedIn, Discord

These are the easy ones.

  1. Copy paste the stand aside in to a new post.
  2. Put the link to the article on a fresh line.
  3. Tag any authors on that platform
  4. If you have space, maybe throw in a relevant hashtag or two
  5. Post!

Instagram, TikTok

You need to make a graphic using the "Instagram Template" folder in Google Drive.

  1. Download an image from the article and arrange it in the background
  2. Change the text to the stand aside
  3. File -> Export -> JPG
  4. Either Airdrop the file created to your phone, or use a cloud sync thing

Then upload to Instagram:

  1. Log into Instagram
  2. Add the photo as a new post
  3. Tag anyone on IG who is mentioned
  4. Add the stand aside as the description
  5. Add some music and a location (helps the algorithm)
  6. Post it!
  7. Share the post to a story

And TikTok:

  1. Log into TikTok
  2. Add the photo as a new post
  3. Tag anyone on TikTok who is mentioned (non critical)
  4. Put the article title as the title
  5. Add the stand aside as the description
  6. Add some music and a location (helps the algorithm)
  7. Post!
